Fire Warden Course

It is important that a sufficient number of competent persons are nominated to implement the evacuation procedures and whatever steps are required for the effective use of firefighting equipment on the premises. Many organisations fulfil this requirement by the appointment and training of fire wardens to assist during an evacuation of the premises, and in the use of the fire extinguishers provided. Fire wardens can act as the eyes and ears of the person appointed to manage fire safety in the premises by constantly being alert to the hazards and associated risks of fire in their workplace and reporting any problems before they are allowed to develop.

This course, will add on the Basic Fire Awareness Course, on goes into more detail regarding Fire Evacuation, and roles of the Fire Wardens

The duration of this course is 4 hours.

Fire Evacuation Plans

In premises where members of the public or persons unfamiliar with layout of the premises are present there should be means available to identify the key escape routes. They could include schematic drawings and most importantly emergency escape and exit signs.

Fire Evacuation Drills

No one knows when disaster could strike, it can happen anywhere at any time. The best thing we can do for ourselves and our employees is to have an emergency evacuation plan.

Practice makes Perfect. It is important to practice evacuation drills on a regular basis to ensure everyone knows exactly what they are supposed to do. It helps eliminate chaos and regular practice makes sure even new employees know exactly what they are supposed to do. A good evacuation plan keeps employees calm and gives them a checklist for exactly what they are supposed to do. It keeps them focused on the task at hand and their #1 goal which is to get to safety. It is also important for all employees to know what they are supposed to do so that they can aid any visitors that may be present. Also, make good use of the practice drill time by making sure that escape routes are clear from clutter and that all fire safety devices are in working order, (fire extinguishers, smoke detectors etc.) and to ensure that all first aid devices are in their proper place. A good plan is a plan well executed.

The fire evacuation drill tries to present a simulation of a fire situation. Usually the fire alarm is activated and building occupants are required to implement their emergency procedures. The evacuation is observed by a drill co-ordinator who will evaluate and report on proceedings.

In Malta, Subsidiary Legislation 424.15 states: "(15) The employer shall ensure that fire drills are carried out at least once every six months and a record kept of these drills:"

Control fire explosion with extinguishers

Consultancy on fire extinguishers and emergency signage

Fire Extinguishers should be located in conspicuous positions, available at all times for immediate use.

Extinguishers should be securely hung on wall brackets with the carrying handle of larger heavier extinguishers 1 metre from the floor. For smaller extinguishers (not heavier than 4kg), the carrying handle should be mounted 1.5 metres from the floor.

Where this is impractical extinguishers should be located on suitable floor stands. In schools and similar locations, it is preferable to use recessed housing, suitable cabinets or extinguisher covers.

Extinguishers should generally be sited in such a way that it is not necessary to travel more than 30 metres from the site of a fire to reach an extinguisher (Class A risk). For flammable liquid, cooking oil/fat or electrical risks the travel distance should not exceed 10 metres (Class B and Class F risk).

To avoid confusion, all extinguishers installed in any one building or single occupancy should have the same method of operation and if intended for the same function should be similar in shape, appearance and colour. The position and type of fire extinguisher should be indicated by a sign.

Wherever possible, portable extinguishers should be grouped to form a fire point (an area with multiple exit options, extinguishers and a means to raise the alarm).
